Historically I managed household expenses and investment decisions personally with collaboration/approval of my wife; we did not have a financial advisor. We paid our bills, saved some money, tithed to our church and got our two daughters through college with very little debt. Another words, we were stable financially; along the way we felt that we were making good decisions, however a few which typically were made in haste with the hope of a quick buck turned out to be major mistakes. Then a significant life transition occurred 10+ years ago. The company for which I had worked for several years merged with a larger firm which resulted in cash payment for our company stock as it was an employee owned firm.
