About Me

Hi, I'm Joe Brown. I grew up in Erie, PA, and lived there until I joined the Coast Guard at 18, when I attended the Coast Guard Academy. I graduated and earned my undergraduate degree in Marine and Environmental Sciences.

The following years have been spent serving the Coast Guard, first aboard CGC POLAR SEA. Then I was onward to MSO San Diego, after which I earned a Master’s in Organic Chemistry from San Diego State Univ and became a Professor at the CGA. After I served at MSU Morgan City, LA, I was selected to earn my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (URI 2015). I finished my career as a Chemistry Professor at CGA in 2023.

My retirement was getting close, and I thought about what aspects I have enjoyed, excelled at, and would want to continue in my next chapter after the last 24+ years. And what resonated repeatedly was helping individuals discern their goals and values and then live them out. This led me to financial planning as a profession that will allow me to continue to help people to discover their values and goals and then live them.

I am currently working on obtaining my CFP. I finished my Master of Science in Personal Finance in June 2023.

I live in Westerly, RI, with my wife, Melissa, son, Joseph, two daughters, Isabella and Cecilia, and our dog, Zoe. We love to travel and experience everything that the world has to offer. In fact, one of my lifelong goals is to visit all 7 continents. I have visited 5 so far and only have South America and Africa left to see. My wife is only interested in 6, saying that she has no desire to experience the cold of Antarctica!

Planning with us is a four step process that follows the tenets of appreciative financial planning:

1. DISCOVERY: An introductory meeting and discovery meetings to learn your strengths, successes, personal, and professional values. This gives us the opportunity to determine if we’re a good fit.

2. DREAM: Articulate your values and objectives to answer the “why” and “what are we trying to achieve” questions. We establish your time horizon and capacity, appetite, towards risks and your vision for your business, family, and future. We will identify goals and objectives to create an actionable strategy.

3. DESIGN: We’ll layout different options with their anticipated outcomes. We’ll establish action items and receive your feedback to help determine which course to take, then share timelines and metrics that empowers you to achieve your goals. We'll also build a policy with guidelines to keep your portfolio on track and manage emotions during the ups and downs.

4. DELIVERY: After you choose your plan, We'll periodically check in on your progress. This allows you to identify what’s working and what's not, re-balance the portfolio to within design confines. We'll adjust your strategy as-needed and communicate any progress to make sure you never get off course.

Once your course is set, we will continue to help you on your financial journey. If things change, we will help you adjust your course to align with your desired path. You’ll have ongoing access to our services for questions, to share in life’s joys and challenges, or to be a sounding board. We will go on the adventure with you.
