About Bob Porter

Hi, I'm Bob Porter, President and CEO of Porter Investments. I have spent over 20 years designing and offering strategic investment management solutions that help engaged investors age 50+ have less frustration and more growth in the management of their portfolio.

My Path to Becoming an Investment Advisor

This business was the farthest thing from my mind while growing up in Texas. As a kid, I wanted to be a professional football player. I played nose guard in high school, but at the time, my physique more closely resembled an actual football—turned sideways. In college, I majored in electrical engineering, but a second-year course in Thermodynamics and Differential Equations made me rethink that career idea. Fortunately, I had taken enough math and science courses to earn a B.S. in Computer Science.

After graduation, I worked in software development and developed cost analysis systems for businesses. I became increasingly interested in investments and investment analysis.

Getting Started with Fidelity Investments

My first job in this industry was with Fidelity Investments. I cold called a manager and asked about working there. Since I didn’t have a professional license or prior experience, he couldn’t offer much help and he assumed that was the end of the conversation.

I convinced another firm to sponsor me for the exams. I was able to pass both on the first try, went back to the Fidelity manager, and he extended an offer to me after going their extensive hiring process.

During my time at Fidelity, I worked with thousands of investors, helping them with asset allocation issues, conducting investment seminars, and specializing in retirement issues. Several years later, I launched Porter Investments.

Investment Management is Not Just About the Numbers

We all invest to make money. Let's not forget that. But after talking to thousands of individual investors over the years and understanding the motivations behind their decisions, I’ve seen every type of emotion and unconscious bias that we, as humans, experience. Some people exhibit different ones than others, and some to greater degrees.

When it comes to investment decisions, I’m intrigued by the challenge of helping people get out of their own way—to at least minimize those unconscious behaviors that have prevented them from achieving what they need or expect. Investing is like anything else in your life – there will always be uncertainty about the future. Success in growing portfolios depends on how well we can envision and cope with whatever reality throws into our investing path. When you do that, you can get the highest reliable returns.

Outside of the Office

After the early days in software, my wife and I became proud parents of three daughters. They are all married now and officially off the “payroll.” Plus, all three of my sons-in-law play golf, making for an enjoyable foursome.

My wife and I enjoy snow skiing and hiking in Colorado, spending time with our expanded family, traveling, and hanging out with our two Labrador Retrievers. We are active members of our church, where I have been a longtime usher. We also participate in various church-related activities that provide funds and services to those in need throughout the Houston area.

The History of Porter Investments

The Porter Investments Strategies were developed by our President and founder, Bob Porter. His prior work at Fidelity Investments allowed him the opportunity to advise and study a diverse group of investors. At Fidelity he realized regardless of investors backgrounds, their career successes, or their net worth – Everybody falls into the same investing traps. One of their more damaging traps for individuals is letting their portfolio go through periods where it gives back significant portions of it’s prior gains. If investor could improve, in just that one area, their longer term results would be dramatically better.

We realized you cannot dramatically improve just by trying harder, you have to change. Prior work with technology companies and software development provided a basis for our understanding of Quantitative models and its potential impact on investing. Large investment firms, with large IT budgets, had been using similar systems internally for years. Since the early 2000s, advances in software and computing power have made it possible for the individual investor to prosper.

A team of engineers, PHDs, and industry people with a history of developing proven quantitative and mathematical models was assembled. People were sought with varying backgrounds, that collectively could bring their unique experiences and algorithms. Many hours continue to be spent researching, analyzing, and assembling the proper combinations of these models to provide our clients with an diverse offering of Strategies seeking various risk and reward goals. We also developed relationships with institutional trading firms to provide an efficient execution of the Strategies derived from our tactical combination of models. Our performance is the result of those associations.

We continually look for ways to develop relationships with firms that creatively use software and other applications to improve the investors experience and outcome. We understand that no person can time the specific top or bottom of the market. But we strongly believe that using proven Quantitative models, utilized in proper allocations, can help the individual investor avoid and even profit from the regular market corrections.
