About Ryan McGonigal

I’m Ryan P. McGonigal, a Rockville, Maryland–based fiduciary financial planner and founder of RPM Financial Group, LLC, a firm focused on high‑earning cybersecurity, Gov‑Con, and federal families. I’ve worked in financial services since 1999 and launched RPM in 2022 to deliver independent, transparent advice tailored to the realities of cleared work and government contracting careers.

For more than two decades, I’ve helped Gen X and Millennial clients untangle complex decisions around income, benefits, taxes, and taking care of the people they love. My job is to turn that complexity into a practical financial plan you understand and actually feel calm and confident following.

My Why
Most advisors think their job is about returns. I think it is about the Tuesday you did not see coming. Eighteen years ago, my brother lost his wife in a tragic accident. They had been married one year. He had a six‑month‑old daughter.

In an instant, the future they were building together was gone. We had some protections in place, but not everything, and watching him navigate that loss while caring for an infant left a mark that never went away. What I do is not just about investment returns or tax strategies; it is about making sure no one I work with has to face life’s hardest moments without the protection and preparation they need.

That experience changed how I see this work. I founded RPM Financial Group to serve Gov‑Con and cybersecurity professionals who deserve more than a template—plans built for the way your family actually lives, with real‑world risks and “Tuesdays” in mind.

Why I Built RPM
I created RPM Financial Group to be the kind of firm I would want my own family to hire: independent, fiduciary‑minded, and built on long‑term relationships, not one‑time transactions.

Life Outside the Office
I live in Rockville with my wife and our three kids, Maggie, Jack, and Kate, and a lot of my free time is spent on ballfields, at school events, and around the grill. Being a husband and dad shapes how I think about risk, time, and what “enough” really means, for my clients and for my own family.
If you see yourself in the RPM story and want a planner who understands your world and takes your family’s future personally, you can reach me through RPM Financial Group to explore whether we are a good fit to work together.

About RPM Financial Group, LLC

At RPM Financial Group, LLC, we help cybersecurity professionals, Gov‑Con business owners, executives, professionals, and federal civil servants with at least $250,000 in household income turn complex finances into a clear, actionable financial plan—so you can grow your wealth, lower your tax bill, and protect what is sacred to your family.

We built RPM for mid‑career Gen X and Millennial households in the DMV and beyond who earn a strong income, feel the weight of big financial decisions, and worry about “missing something important” as life and careers accelerate.

Who We Serve

Our best‑fit clients (all with $250,000+ household income) are:

- Cybersecurity and defense‑adjacent professionals with RSUs, bonuses, and equity who want a tax‑efficient path to financial independence.
- Gov‑Con business owners and key employees balancing irregular cash flow, contract risk, recompetes, and complex benefit packages.
- Gen X and Millennial dual‑income families and career federal employees managing higher incomes, multiple savings goals, and growing financial complexity.

If you are in one of these worlds and your household income is at or above $250,000, and you are tired of piecemeal advice that never quite fits your situation, you are exactly who we designed RPM to serve.

Pain Points We Solve

We focus on the real‑life questions that keep high‑earning, responsibility‑heavy families up at night:

- “Am I paying more in taxes than I should?” – We design tax‑aware portfolios, use strategies like tax‑loss harvesting, and coordinate with your CPA so more of what you earn stays with your family.
- “How do I make the most of my compensation and benefits?” – We help you optimize RSUs, stock plans, TSP/401(k), bonuses, pensions, and employer insurance so they work together inside one coordinated financial plan.
- “Will my family be okay if something happens to me?” – We analyze income, savings, and existing policies to build a protection strategy for disability, job loss, or premature death.
- “Can we pay for college and still retire on time?” – We map out college funding, retirement savings, and debt payoff into a single, realistic plan you can follow year by year.
- “How do I care for my parents without derailing my own plan?” – We guide you through planning for aging parents while keeping your own long‑term financial independence on track.

What We Do

At RPM Financial Group, everything starts with a comprehensive financial plan tailored to your career, your contracts, and your family.

Our services include:

- Financial planning – Cash‑flow organization, goal setting, benefit optimization, and a written roadmap that pulls all the moving parts of your financial life into one coordinated strategy.
- Investment management – Evidence‑based portfolios aligned with your time horizon and risk tolerance, coordinated with your employer plans and built to support tax‑efficient wealth building.
- Tax planning strategies – Proactive planning for equity compensation, capital gains, Roth vs. pre‑tax decisions, and tax‑loss harvesting—not just “after‑the‑fact” tax filing.
- Insurance analysis – Objective review of life, disability, and long‑term care coverage to help ensure your family, your income, and your business are appropriately protected.
- Estate planning – Through our partnership with Trust & Will, we work with you to create a trust or will‑based plan so your wishes are documented, your estate is organized, and you and your loved ones have true peace of mind.
- Retirement & financial independence planning – Scenario testing and clear action steps so you know what it takes to work by choice, not necessity.

How We Work With You

We believe you deserve ongoing, relationship‑driven financial planning, not a thick binder that goes on a shelf. a deep‑dive financial plan that clarifies where you are today, where you want to go, and what needs to happen next.
- Then we partner with you through subscription‑style ongoing planning, with tiered service levels designed for different stages of life and complexity.
- You get regular check‑ins, implementation support, and on‑call guidance as life, markets, contracts, and family needs inevitably change.
As an independent, fiduciary‑minded firm, our advice is built around your best interests, your family, and your long‑term goals, not product quotas or sales targets.

Why Clients Choose RPM

Ryan P. McGonigal founded RPM Financial Group after more than two decades in financial services, specifically to serve cybersecurity, Gov‑Con, and federal families whose unique world is rarely understood by traditional advisors.

Clients choose RPM because they want:

- A planner who speaks the language of cybersecurity, government contracting, and federal benefits, and understands how these careers really work.
- A warm, family‑centered relationship with someone who knows what it is like to raise kids, support aging parents, and build a business or career at the same time.
- Clear, straightforward guidance that turns complexity into a practical plan and helps them feel genuinely in control of their financial future.

If you are a cybersecurity professional, Gov‑Con business owner, key employee, or federal civil servant in your 30s, 40s, or 50s with household income of $250,000 or more, and you are ready for a planning partner who truly understands your world, reach out to RPM Financial Group to schedule an introductory conversation.

Together, we will build a practical, tax‑smart financial plan that helps grow your wealth, protects what matters most, and supports the life you are working so hard to create for your family.

✅ Wealthtender Certified Advisor Review™

I've worked with Ryan for more than six years now, and I am very glad I was introduced to him by a colleague. I am a Federal employee getting ready to retire early next year, and I am more comfortable with that retirement decision now after working with Ryan than I was before. I was not confident in where my money was going and how it was working for me. I am now more knowledgeable about my money and my future. Ryan is always available to answer any questions and to support not just me, but my family as well.
