The Question
Roth Conversion in 2025 and 2026?Roth Conversion in 2025 and 2026?
i executed a ROTH Conversion at the end of Tax Year 2025. I believe I want to perform at least one more ROTH Conversion in Tax Year 2026. My question is, does the conversion in Tax Year 2026 come with its own 5-year waiting period or does it default back to the Tax Year 2025 waiting period?
Hey TJL, I’ve gotten this question a few times recently. The 5-year Roth window for conversions is treated differently than the 5-year rule for normal contributions. For Roth conversions specifically, each individual conversion has its own unique 5-year window.
This makes tracking those very important, in case you would ever need supporting evidence in an audit, a simple spreadsheet can be helpful to stay organized. The window is also calendar year based, meaning if you made a conversion in December of 2025, the 5 year clock is started as of January 2025 (effectively shortening it to just over 4 years).
Hope that helps!
