Unfortunately, a long time if you follow minimum payments. Credit card debt is very difficult to get out from under but it’s not impossible. It’s difficult because progress is slow initially and losing motivation is where most people fail. It takes a long-term plan that includes changes in lifestyle and coaching from a behavioral perspective. The good news is this: it is 100% solvable with the right plan of action. Most plans are highly specific to the individual and include a myriad of solutions that when combined give you a roadmap of what card to pay, how much to pay, and when to pay it. Consider going to the CFP Board’s Find an Advisor tool and look for someone in your area that works with Debt Management. Some CFP®’s do pro-bono work as a way to give back to the community and they can also earn required continuing education credits that the designation requires each year for pro-bono work. You may have some success locating one that can help you plan out a strategy to pay the debt back.
