About Me

Hi - I'm Eric Amzalag CFP®, RICP® - I help break down the complex problem of preparing for financial independence (or retirement) into simple actionable steps so that you can bring order to your finances and live in peace with your money.

While studying Economics and Accounting at University of California, Santa Barbara, I knew I wanted a career of service to others. I didn't know what form that would take and began my search.

I walked several paths including real estate brokerage, marketing, and the family business but none of them scratched the itch that I had to be a facilitator and educator.

For the past 10 years my wife and I have owned and run a private gym in Los Angeles CA together - health coaching has been a very influential part of my life. When Covid hit in 2020, my wife and I decided to take our gym business virtual. She took over the business and I became securities licensed and credentialed as a Financial Planner. (While I am no longer a part of the fitness business, my wife Amanda still happily operates it to this day).

I began apprenticing as a formal financial planner and investment advisor at Ameriprise Financial. The experience did not last long - I had a conflict of values with the incentive model of appearing to provide financial advice when in actuality trying to sell insurance policies.

I decided to leave the brokerage and insurance world to launch Peak Financial Planning. My background in health and fitness informs how I run my financial planning practice.

When you go to the Doctor - they take all sorts of diagnostic tests before making any recommendations.

Understanding your health history, what medication you may be taking, what injuries or ailments you’ve had in the past, as well as what injuries or ailments you may be susceptible to allows them to prescribe solutions to you that do not cause harm AND are most likely to solve your problem.

Documenting your Financial Plan is the equivalent of the evaluative process at the Doctors office.

Most financial advice ends up doing more harm than good - ESPECIALLY when that advice is given in absence of a financial plan.

Your Financial Plan is your roadmap - it is the framework that takes into account your financial education, position, and wishes - and allows you to make optimal decisions in accordance with that framework.

With regard to investing, my view is that investing is like gardening.

If you never plant seeds, your garden will never grow. If however, you plant the seeds and then ignore them for the rest of eternity, your garden will become overgrown and rotten.

Yes, it may appear beautiful for a time, but that is an illusion.

Investing is much the same. Investing is a purpose driven activity - the goal of which is to take your saved dollars and maintain your purchasing power over a period of many years.

In order to do this, we must match the time horizon over which you’ll need access to your funds, with an appropriate risk-reward framework, and then select investments that optimize for that.

The work does not end there. Just as with a garden, it is important to harvest the fruits of your labor. You can then use those rewards to expand your garden.

In wealth management this means harvesting your winners, cutting short your losers, and redeploying your capital to “plant new seeds”.

I believe investing is an active discipline that requires ongoing monitoring, adjusting, and expertise.

Thank you for your consideration! I look forward to the opportunity to get to know you!
