About Audrey Emerson, MS, CFP®, BFA™
Hey! I’m Audrey Emerson. My path to becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® Professional was a somewhat unconventional one. As a former (recovering?) theater kid, I earned a degree in film and spent years as a producer in the dynamic world of social impact entertainment and corporate video.
It was through the lens of my creative community that my interest in finance became deeply personal. My talented friends didn’t have access to traditional employer benefits like 401(k)s and affordable health insurance and I felt driven to figure out alternatives, initially to help myself and those around me.
This personal exploration ignited a passion that grew as I realized I genuinely enjoyed helping my friends reduce the financial drama in their life more than being on set. This ultimately led me to pursue my CFP® certification, gain valuable experience with the team at Cultivating Wealth, and finally launch Cents of Joy Financial Planning.
My background in storytelling and understanding diverse perspectives deeply informs my accessible and empathetic approach to financial planning. My hope is that by really listening and getting to know your story, we can build a meaningful, effective, and joyful financial life for you!
Outside of talking about money, you can find me exploring the hiking and biking trails of the North Cascades and hosting monthly themed wine tasting nights with friends. Originally a New Englander, I've happily made Bellingham, WA my home (but still root for all Boston sports teams obviously).
📍 Located: Bellingham, Washington (but I work with clients remotely nationwide)
⛰️ Hobbies: Hiking uphill, biking downhill, drinking wine, birdwatching, and reading the newspaper in print!
🍕 First Job: Worked the cash register at A1 Pizza in Little Compton, Rhode Island (it was cash only so I actually made change!)
🎥 Previous Career: Producer for documentary & corporate video
✈️ Favorite Trips: Lisbon, Bordeaux, and Armenia
📚 Favorite Money Book: Finance for the People by Paco de Leon
👩🎓 Education: BA in Cinema & Media Studies from University of Southern California & MS in Leadership for Creative Enterprises from Northwestern University
🙄 Jargon: Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) professional, Advice-Only, Fee-Only Fiduciary. Translation: I don’t manage investments, and only get paid by you. I can not (and would not) accept commissions and I am legally required to put your best interests first.

Cents of Joy offers human-first financial planning for creatives, freelancers, & DIY millennials ready to swap money anxiety for financial joy.Your life is intentional. Your money can be too.
You show up every day driven by a deep sense of purpose for your family, your work, and your life. You’re a go-getter, a creator, a friend that others look up to. But when it comes to money, perhaps you don’t feel as confident or organized as you want to be.
The financial world is full of jargon, judgment, and unnecessary barriers designed to make you feel small. Frankly, managing your money can be hard—both mathematically and emotionally. But with a little grace, curiosity, and some personalized guidance, you can build a financial life that feels as intentional as you are.
Hi, I’m Audrey. I’m a former film producer turned financial planner, and I founded Cents of Joy to meet you exactly where you are in your financial life. With no income or asset minimums, I offer accessible human-first financial guidance with a specific focus on helping creative millennials, freelancers, self-employed business owners, and newlyweds.
Think of me as your personal CFO: A problem-solving Excel nerd who gives you the confidence to make bold life choices, the clarity you need to spend joyfully, and the peace of mind to focus on whatever you love most.
What We Do
Cents of Joy offers comprehensive financial planning and personal investment advice without managing your accounts. In the industry, this is known as advice-only. I am also a “fee-only” advisor which means I only get paid by my clients and don’t accept commissions. And I'm a "fiduciary" which means I always act in your best interests.
We have no minimum asset or income level. Rather, we focus solely on understanding your unique circumstances and provide objective recommendations aligned with your values, always acting in your best interest. We charge a flat rate based on an estimated number of hours and our hourly rate is $300.
Our most common way of working together is through a 3-4 month integrated planning process that dives deep into all areas of your financial life. We call it The Blueprint. However, we also offer a one hour session on a sliding scale for those that just want to get an urgent question answered. On occasion, we can do custom scope projects as well.
Who We Serve
Our advice-only hourly structure means we can work with just about anyone! However, we have a specific love of helping the following types of folks. If you don’t fit into the categories below, that’s okay, I’d still love to get to know you and see how I could help. If I’m not the right person, I’ll do my best to find someone who is and get you pointed in the right direction.
▪️ Self-Employed Business Owners & Freelancers
Working for yourself is amazing! But financially it comes with unique challenges like irregular cash flow, planning for taxes(!), how to save for retirement, and paying for health insurance/maximizing union benefits. You’ve already got a business to run, so let us take the financial stress off your plate. We’ll help set your financial life up so you can feel more like a 9-5 employee, while still being the boss.
▪️ Newlyweds & Couples Merging Finances
Congratulations! Merging your lives is exciting. But merging your finances can feel overwhelming. From navigating a new tax filing status, figuring out how to organize and manage joint spending, and prioritizing your goals, I’ll help you get on the same page and build a financial life that works for both of you!
▪️ Creative Professionals & DIY Millennials
As a former film producer, I know your passion is your craft, not your cash flow and that you value learning and doing things on your own terms. My goal is to be your financial thought-partner, helping you review the big picture, gut-check your investment strategy, and ensure your approach is setting you up to reach your biggest life goals.

We Want Your Voice to be Heard
Wealthtender exists to help people discover trusted and authentic financial professionals and educators who may be a good fit based on their unique needs and circumstances.
Your honest reviews help people decide which financial professionals and educators may be best suited to their individual needs.
The majority of people trust reviews as much as personal recommendations, so what you write in your review should reflect your own opinion and experience.
Tips for Writing a Helpful Review
Be descriptive. Instead of just saying what you like or dislike, share why. What have you enjoyed most or least about your experience with the provider? Have they helped you overcome a difficult financial challenge or strengthened your knowledge about particular money matters? The more details, the better!
Be honest. Your rating and review should reflect your actual experience.
Stay relevant. Ensure your review is helpful to others by avoiding off-topic discussions or personal opinions not relevant to your direct experience.
Make your review easy to read. Reviews should be readable to others. Use proper grammar, avoid excessive capitalization or punctuation, and be sure to check your spelling.
Be yourself. Don’t post as, or pretend to be, someone else, and do not say you’re associated with a person or organization with which you are not.
Be nice. Don’t write abusive, hateful, threatening, or harassing content. Avoid personal threats, hate speech, obscenities, or inflammatory language.
Respect the privacy of others. Don’t post information that can be used to identify another individual or compromise their privacy.
Report abuse. Thank you for helping us ensure reviews on Wealthtender are helpful to everyone. If you suspect possible violations of our guidelines or believe a review is inappropriate, please email support@wealthtender.com with a link to the provider’s profile, indicating the review in question and the reason you believe it violates our guidelines.
