About Me
I help families that are near or in retirement with tax-smart retirement planning and investment management.Winding Trail Financial Planning, LLC was founded as an independent, fee-only, fiduciary financial planning firm in order to provide objective advice.
I am a licensed Certified Public Accountant (Michigan, Colorado) and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. While my experience in public accounting and in private industry has given me a unique perspective to financial planning, I place high value on self-improvement.
In 2013, my wife and I made the decision to move halfway across the country to Boulder County, Colorado and I took a Senior Accountant position with a privately-held, multi-entity healthcare consulting firm. I was eventually promoted to Chief Administrative Officer. As CAO, I oversaw the accounting and finance functions of the company as well as human resources including benefits administration. In addition to the business side, I also played an integral part in assisting with the personal finances of the business owners.
In our time off, you can usually find my wife and I enjoying our local trails whether it's backpacking through Rocky Mountain National Park, trail running throughout Boulder and Jefferson counties, or snowshoeing the high country. We still get back to Michigan to visit friends and family and we try to celebrate Adrienne's birthday in a new city each year. We welcomed the birth of our first child, Emmerich, in August 2018, and our second, Arlowe, in March 2022.

I highly recommend Dwight and Winding Trail for fee-only fiduciary financial planning. Dwight provided a very thorough assessment of my current financial picture, my planning needs, and he created a customized and very comprehensive approach which far exceeded my expectations. Because Dwight also has a background as a CPA, he was often able to provide insight about how financial planning choices might impact taxes and vice versa. I appreciated having this integrated approach. Financial planning can be complicated, but Dwight always explained things clearly in a way I could understand and documented it all in writing so I can go back to review our plan any time. His service more than paid for itself and was a great value. I can't recommend him highly enough!

My wife and I have been working with Dwight for over 2 years. He has helped us come together on finances. He has a calm style, making sure that he understands our needs and future plans, along with making sure we are aligning on both. He follows up quickly from our meetings with supporting material and a recap of the advice he provided. Dwight is very responsive to questions outside of our meetings. He has also advised me against at least one reactionary money decision in the past couple years (volatile money times) that would have cost us some major money. Finally, he has made us comfortable with some life goals from the financial side (including having a kid) . I would recommend him to anyone needing sound financial advice in these volatile times.
