About Me

Hi, I'm Jeff McDermott.

While my interest in personal finance dates back to grade school “stock picking” assignments and investment fundamentals senior projects in high school, my career helping individual investors began in 2003.

After spending time managing a branch office for a large online brokerage firm, I went to work for one of the nation's largest retirement plan providers as an advisor providing comprehensive financial planning advice for high net worth clients. Over time I have gained two decades of experience evaluating investments, retirement plans, insurance offerings, and many of the complicated elements of your financial life you may be struggling with. In 2016 I completed the requirements to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation.

I always had a vision for a firm dedicated to helping people become financially independent, not just helping those who are already there. In 2020 I founded Create Wealth Financial Planning to help individuals and families make positive financial decisions earlier in the planning process. These decisions can compound positively for decades into the future. I added the Certified Student Loan Professional™ (CSLP®) designation in 2021 to allow me to focus in on clients with unique student loan needs.

In between client meetings I like to keep a clear head playing piano - usually classical or rock songs, or weightlifting out in the garage and getting myself ready for my next competition. My wife Michele and our two wonderful daughters (and our dog Pie) live in Saint Johns, Florida and love spending time with family and friends, a quick trip to St. Augustine or to the beach, and cheering on our favorite sports teams.

Young Professionals, Young Families, Gen X and Gen Y don't always have access to the same quality of financial planning those who have already accumulated a sizable nest egg do. At Create Wealth Financial Planning (CWFP) we work with you to define the ideal life you want for yourself and those around you and to put a solid plan in place earlier in life to make those dreams a reality.

Everyone who works with Create Wealth Financial Planning starts with a comprehensive financial plan (with the exception of Student Loan only plans). A comprehensive financial plan forms a basis for all initial financial planning recommendations, and all future review and monitoring of your unique situation. Your comprehensive financial plan is your road map for how to get from where you are today to where you want to be in the future.

Comprehensive planning starts by defining your unique needs, wants, and wishes that you have for yourself and the other important people in your life. This is how we know where you want to go on your financial journey.

I have been a DIY investment guy for the past 25 years, partially because I really enjoy it, but also because I never felt comfortable that an advisor would have my best interests at heart. Then I meet Jeff through a family member and learned how he is a true fiduciary both legally and more importantly because of his integrity. This became obvious as we worked together to consolidate my many retirement accounts that were spread out over several companies. Long story short, he advised me to move the largest account worth almost a million into my company 401k rather than an account he would receive commission, because the 401k fees were lower. I trust actions more than words and this showed me everything I needed to see. Thank you Jeff and I look forward to a long relationship together.

We've been working with Jeff for over two years now and he's been amazing for us. Getting married, starting a family and combining lives is stressful enough so having someone be able to help us make smarter decisions with our money has been a lifesaver. I don't know who I appreciate more- my kids who recommended Jeff or Jeff for wrangling my finances for an early-ish retirement!
