About Michael Tomren, MS, CFP®, AIF®, ChFC®
Hi, I'm Michael Tomren, Managing Partner and Financial Planner at Tomren & Sullivan Wealth Management.Over a career spanning more than 29 years, I have worked to earn the credentials and training I believe my clients deserve. I hold the CFP®, AIF®, and ChFC® designations, a Master of Science in Advanced Financial Planning from Golden Gate University, and a Certificate in Client Psychology from The Wharton School. I am also a member of Ed Slott's Elite IRA Advisor Group℠ - a distinction held by fewer than 1% of financial advisors in the United States, reflecting my commitment to staying at the forefront of IRA and retirement tax planning. These are not just letters after a name - they represent a genuine commitment to being the most knowledgeable advisor I can be for the families who trust us with their financial lives.
As you might guess, my earliest memories of money helped shape my career choice. My father was a government employee, and my mother chose to leave the workforce to raise my three younger brothers and me. We were fortunate to grow up that way, and I’m grateful for the example my parents set.
When it came to finances, they knew how to stretch a paycheck and keep a busy household running. Between sports, school activities, doctor visits, and the occasional trip, they made it all work - something I appreciate even more as an adult. Through their example, my brothers and I learned to respect money: to set aside something for emergencies, to use some for enjoyment, and to save enough to build long-term independence. Those principles stuck with me, and from an early age I made a commitment to live by them.
In college, I initially pursued a degree in civil engineering, but along the way I found myself drawn more and more to financial planning - particularly the way it combines analytical rigor with deeply human relationships. I chose to pursue that path fully, and I have never looked back. I’m thankful for the circumstances that led me to that change in direction, because today -rather than building bridges and buildings - I get to help people create and maintain strong financial structures. In many ways, it’s not so different from engineering, and I’ve always valued that this work allows me to build relationships along the way.
On a personal level, I truly feel like the luckiest man on the planet, and I don’t take it for granted. One particularly lucky day, I stepped into an elevator and met a beautiful woman named Shawna. I had no idea that we would become best friends, get married, and build a life together. Years later, we’re blessed with three children - Jordyn, Ava, and Brannon - two grandchildren, and two spoiled Boston Terriers. In our spare time, we enjoy traveling, spending time at the beach, and supporting our kids in all of their activities.
And before you go, I want to simply say thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my profile and learn more about Tomren & Sullivan Wealth Management. As you evaluate our services and areas of expertise, I hope you also get a sense of the people behind the firm. I’m honored to work alongside a team that cares deeply about our clients and brings their best each day - with kindness, ownership, positivity, and an unwavering commitment to putting clients first.
Some of our favorite moments are celebrating life’s milestones with the families we serve - retirements, graduations, weddings, and the meaningful moments that become lifelong memories. In the end, that’s what our firm is all about: helping you build the resources, freedom, and time to go out and make more memories with the people you care about most.

About Tomren & Sullivan Wealth Management
Tomren & Sullivan Wealth Management is a fiduciary financial planning firm based in San Ramon, California, providing retirement, tax, and IRA planning for pre-retirees and retirees throughout San Ramon and the East Bay.Who We Serve
We work primarily with affluent Bay Area families navigating retirement timing, tax strategy, equity compensation, legacy planning, and major life transitions, typically clients approaching retirement or managing substantial assets. Many are transitioning out of careers at the region's leading tech companies, as well as longtime employees of major Bay Area utilities like AT&T, PG&E, and Chevron.
Our Process
We walk beside clients through our 7-Step Financial Planning Process, a consistent approach designed to help build confidence, create opportunity, and face the future with greater clarity and purpose. We begin by getting to know your goals and values, then organize the full picture of your financial life, build a plan tailored to you, coordinate implementation with your other professionals, and stay closely connected through ongoing reviews as your life and portfolio evolve.
Why Work With Us
Our mission is to provide competent and prudent financial advice while delivering expert service and valuable communication to our clients. We believe implementation isn't a one-time event; it's the start of an ongoing partnership built on communication and connection, and we aim for clarity about our role and how we're compensated from the very start.

We Want Your Voice to be Heard
Wealthtender exists to help people discover trusted and authentic financial professionals and educators who may be a good fit based on their unique needs and circumstances.
Your honest reviews help people decide which financial professionals and educators may be best suited to their individual needs.
The majority of people trust reviews as much as personal recommendations, so what you write in your review should reflect your own opinion and experience.
Tips for Writing a Helpful Review
Be descriptive. Instead of just saying what you like or dislike, share why. What have you enjoyed most or least about your experience with the provider? Have they helped you overcome a difficult financial challenge or strengthened your knowledge about particular money matters? The more details, the better!
Be honest. Your rating and review should reflect your actual experience.
Stay relevant. Ensure your review is helpful to others by avoiding off-topic discussions or personal opinions not relevant to your direct experience.
Make your review easy to read. Reviews should be readable to others. Use proper grammar, avoid excessive capitalization or punctuation, and be sure to check your spelling.
Be yourself. Don’t post as, or pretend to be, someone else, and do not say you’re associated with a person or organization with which you are not.
Be nice. Don’t write abusive, hateful, threatening, or harassing content. Avoid personal threats, hate speech, obscenities, or inflammatory language.
Respect the privacy of others. Don’t post information that can be used to identify another individual or compromise their privacy.
Report abuse. Thank you for helping us ensure reviews on Wealthtender are helpful to everyone. If you suspect possible violations of our guidelines or believe a review is inappropriate, please email support@wealthtender.com with a link to the provider’s profile, indicating the review in question and the reason you believe it violates our guidelines.
