Get the Most Value from Your Aspen Dental Benefits and Compensation Package

Throughout the year, Aspen Dental provides its employees and executives with updates about their benefits ranging from health insurance and health savings plans to retirement plans like a 401(k), deferred compensation plans, and more. While the company offers many useful resources and access to knowledgeable staff who can assist with questions, you’ll also find financial professionals not affiliated with Aspen Dental who specialize in helping Aspen Dental employees make the most of their income and benefits.

Whether you work in the Aspen Dental headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, another location around the country, or remotely from home, you may have questions about your compensation package and benefits better suited for a financial professional who can offer unbiased advice and guidance.

For example, sensitive topics like discussing the steps you should take before quitting your job at Aspen Dental to work elsewhere, protecting yourself in advance of a corporate layoff, or deciding when you should plan to retire are all conversations that may be more comfortable with a trusted financial advisor.

Should you hire an Aspen Dental specialist financial advisor or an advisor close to home?

You’ll likely find dozens of nearby financial advisors well-suited to help you reach your money goals with a personalized plan. But it may be more difficult to find a financial advisor who specializes in serving Aspen Dental employees.

Fortunately, many financial advisors offer virtual services so you can meet online no matter where you (or they) live.

This means you can choose to hire a specialist financial advisor who lives hundreds of miles away if you decide their knowledge and experience working with Aspen Dental employees is a better fit to help with your unique needs.

💡 In the Q&A below, you’ll gain insights from financial advisors who work with Aspen Dental employees to help them make smart decisions to get the most value from their compensation and benefits, reduce their money stress, and prepare for a comfortable retirement.

Q&A: Financial Planning Tips for Aspen Dental Employees & Executives

Answers to Employee Questions with Cecil Staton, CFP®, CSLP®

Cecil Staton is a financial advisor based in Athens, Georgia who specializes in offering financial planning services to Aspen Dental employees. Cecil helps his clients get the most value from their Aspen Dental benefits and compensation package so they can enjoy life and feel confident about their financial future.

Q: As a financial advisor with experience helping Aspen Dental employees save for their retirement, how do you help them make the most of their employee benefits?

Cecil: As a financial advisor with extensive experience helping Aspen Dental dentists maximize their employee benefits, I work closely with each doctor to provide tailored advice related to their specific situation. I help them evaluate the available health insurance plans and determine which PPO or HSA option is most suitable for them. Similarly, I review the student loan repayment options with them to ensure they make the best financial decisions.

Ultimately, my goal is to help Aspen Dental dentists make the most of their employee benefits, so they have a more secure retirement. We help young dentists maximize their 401(k) retirement plan to get the full match. We review each full time employee’s health plans and other retirement benefits.

Q: When you first speak with an Aspen Dental employee, what questions do you like to ask to better understand their unique circumstances and determine how you can best help them achieve their goals?

Cecil: I ask them about their family, career aspirations, hobbies outside of work, and what they want to accomplish with their money. I like to get to know each person I work with, so I can tailor the best-individualized plan for them to reach their goals. I ask them about their Aspen Dental location and ensure they have a competitive compensation package relative to other dentists in the United States. I ask about all areas covered in the Aspen Dental employee handbook as changes by the Aspen Dental management happen. Arch Financial Planning works with many dentists around the country and understands their unique financial challenges.

Q: Beyond Aspen Dental employee benefits for retirement savings, are there other types of benefits offered by the company that you find valuable to discuss with your clients?

Cecil: If you’re using an HSA health plan, then optimize your Health Savings Account (HSA) plan. Discussing your ongoing contributions to the plan and how to invest those dollars is undoubtedly beneficial.

If they have an existing student loan repayment strategy, it’s important to analyze if this is the best option for them. Aspen Dental offers discounts when refinancing through Laurel Road, but there may be better options, such as income-driven repayment plans.

Furthermore, as a dentist, you should have an own-occupation disability and term life insurance policies. Aspen Dental group insurance policies may offer members coverage, but they may need more depending on individual circumstances.

As a licensed dentist, you must take advantage of all CE opportunities, including the dental implants CE course. Team members can practice on a new patient in a controlled setting. Many private practice dentists in an entry-level position can only practice cosmetic dentistry or Oral surgery after paying for expensive CE.

Q: For Aspen Dental employees thinking about leaving the company to accept a job elsewhere, what actions do you recommend they take before resigning and shortly thereafter?

Cecil: If Aspen Dental dentists are thinking about taking a job elsewhere and leaving the company, our first recommendation is to compare the current benefits provided by Aspen Dental with those offered by their prospective employer. If the new employer does not offer comparable benefits, they should plan for additional costs.

For instance, if they’re considering working for a private practice, they may need to obtain benefits from independent brokers, which could prove costly. Before resigning, we urge them to review their options and determine if they can afford any additional costs associated with their new job. Upon resigning, we recommend that employees contact the Human Resources department at Aspen Dental to review options for COBRA with their health insurance and that any unused vacation days are paid out.

Departing employees should also consider expressing gratitude in person or via email for being part of the Aspen Dental family during their tenure. You never know when your paths may cross again!

Q: For Aspen Dental employees who have managed their finances on their own to this point, what would you suggest they consider to help them decide if they should begin working with a financial advisor at this stage in their lives?

Cecil: For dentists at Aspen Dental who have been managing their own finances, it is essential to note that the financial planning industry should be highly specialized. Most practitioners are generalists and don’t understand the unique needs of dentists. A financial planner specializing in dentists can help prioritize goals through the lens of other successful dentists.

A good financial advisor can also ensure dentists are prepared for the future uncertainties life presents by helping create strategies for any potential setbacks or unforeseen changes in income. Working with a knowledgeable and experienced dental financial professional will provide access to greater resources, comparison shopping, and a better understanding of taxes and wealth management. A CFP® and CSLP® can be an exceptional resource for personal finance advice tailored to a dentist’s unique needs.
