The world has changed. Has your financial advisor changed with it?

If the idea of commuting back and forth to meet your financial advisor in their office feels a little antiquated, you’re not alone. In a world that’s moved online, finding an advisor who offers 100% digital services means more time in your day to prioritize family, your career, or whatever matters most.

Beyond the time saved by meeting with your advisor online, a 100% digital advisor also means no stacks of paperwork, and no more shuffling through filing cabinets.

Ultimately, what’s most important is finding a financial advisor who truly understands your unique needs, and who has the experience and credentials to help you achieve your goals.

Archer Investment Management is a financial planning firm designed for the next generation. – Q&A With Richard Archer, Founder of Archer Investment Management –

Three Questions with Richard Archer, CDAA, CFA, CFP, MBA

We asked financial advisor and Archer Investment Management founder, Richard Archer, to answer a few questions to help us learn more about what makes his firm unique.

Q: The Archer Investment Management website describes your firm as 100% digital. Can you explain what this means and how it helps the clients who work with you?

Richard: We’ve always served clients across the country, so moving to 100% digital services over the last year wasn’t a challenge. In fact, we’ve found even our local clients prefer to interact fully digitally.

Our clients are busy with jobs, kids, and life and don’t want to fight traffic or find it easier to meet with us while at home where they are comfortable and have access to all of their financial files.

Being 100% digital is more than just Zoom meetings, though.  We also provide:

  • Paperless account transfer, onboarding, and maintenance
  • Online meeting calendars so clients and prospects can choose meeting types and times that fit their schedules and needs
  • Online financial plans and investment performance portals and smartphone apps so clients can watch their assets daily
  • Direct texting to our team.  Many of our younger clients prefer texting to emails and phone calls.  Surprisingly, we’ve also found our retiree clients are now texting us as well!
  • We adopt the latest technology – whether it’s for portfolio management, communication, research, or our website.  We like letting technology help us deliver faster and more comprehensive client service, investment management, and financial planning.

Q: For technology professionals interested in hiring a financial advisor, what advantages can they gain by choosing to work with Archer Investment Management versus an advisor without a focus in this area?

Richard: Over the years, we’ve seen our client base growing primarily from tech professionals as Austin expanded with employers like Tesla, Amazon, Apple, Oracle, and Dell.  We enjoy working with them and they’ve referred their friends and co-workers to us, so we developed expertise to meet their needs.

We’ve had clients change jobs, go through IPOs, receive complex equity compensation, go to startups, and have their firms purchased.  Each change has brought them different challenges and opportunities.  We’ve worked closely with them to help maximize their wealth, sometimes through strategic diversification from a large single stock position, and to minimize their taxes by carefully planning such things as when and how to exercise their incentive stock options (ISOs).

We also conduct a comprehensive employee benefits review to show our clients how to maximize the value of the benefits they’re receiving.

This year, we’ve had a lot of interest in digital assets and cryptocurrencies, so we earned our Certified Digital Asset Adviser (CDAA) designations.  We now offer direct cryptocurrency investments and monitoring for clients who want more exposure to this burgeoning, but very risky, space.

Q: Unlike many financial advisors, you also offer services to manage your clients’ investment accounts through their employers, including 401(k) plans and stock options. Can you explain how this works and when it makes sense for your clients to consider this service?

Richard: Yes.  As part of our forward-looking technology adoption, we’re able to directly manage clients’ employer retirement and equity compensation accounts. Through our complex trading systems, we integrate 401ks, 403bs, restricted stocks accounts, etc. into clients’ investment portfolios to help minimize taxes and fees.

We have a special link we send that provides us the ability to directly trade these accounts, but not to withdraw money or to have access to logins and passwords.

Q: Can you describe how you build investment portfolios and the types of investments you select for your clients?

Richard:  We spend a lot of time with clients discovering risk tolerance and financial and life goals.  We build a professional portfolio to help achieve their goals without taking more risk than they’re comfortable with, all while keeping fees and taxes as low as possible.

One way to do that is by investing in low-fee, tax-efficient Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) index funds. DFA Funds have a special investment tilt and some meaningful trading and operations advantages that historically have provided excess returns over traditional plain-vanilla index funds.

We have an increasing list of clients who seek environmentally sustainable investments, and we now offer models that have been screened for common environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria.  We even have the option to drill down and exclude specific individual stock names or micro-sectors from portfolios. To lean into sustainability even further, this year we’ve purchased carbon offsets at a firm level and for our clients as gifts and are currently renewing our Certified B Corporation status.

In both our traditional and sustainable portfolios, we provide global asset allocations beyond just US large-cap stocks and bonds, which we see heavily overweighted in many portfolios clients transfer in.  We also use our systems to optimize asset location (not just allocation) to minimize taxes and trading costs.  Optimizing asset location is a powerful way we use technology to save clients meaningful money in ways not easily done without superior systems.

We also believe the long-term benefits of digital assets are too great to ignore.  For clients who wish to have them, we can add sophisticated cryptocurrency exposures.
